Year 5 and 6 Girls Football

Lesson: Physical education

Class: Year 6 Kestrels Year: 2018 - 2019

The Year 5 and 6 girls football team were looking to improve on their debut in the Cheshire tournament last year. With our first girls team we lost all of our games without scoring a goal.

But this year Mr Firkins had doubled the training sessions and we hoped this year would be different. Our first match was against tournament favourites - Kings. We defended well and when the ball broke to Amelia she raced through on goal and calmly finished for a 1 - 0 win. The next group game was against Belgrave. They had some quality players but our defence remained strong. Amelia played a lovely ball through to Arabella who slotted it into the corner for another 1 - 0 victory.

Against Highfields, confidence was now high. Charlotte scored her first goal then Nia scored a great goal on the turn. Nia then put one in at the far post and Amelia finished the scoring for a 4 - 0 win. Pressure was on in the last game as a draw would send us to the semi-finals. We didn't need to worry. Tarporley were good, but Amelia dominated the match, scoring early and then Arabella scored her second to make it a 2 - 0 win.

Group winners and so we faced St Clares in the semi-final. One of their players played for Liverpool and tested Anna with some powerful long shots - but Anna was equal to them! She did 3 amazing saves. Then, from a throw in, Charlotte raced in on goal. She got a shot away and the goalkeeper could only fumble it across the line. A 1 - 0 win and we were in the final!

We played the Lache in the final who had some amazing players. We started well but were on the back foot but our defence held. Sadly, we had a little mix up and it led to a penalty. We were a goal down but didn't give up. With just seconds left, Arabella raced through on goal and looked certain to score, but the Lache player pulled off an amazing last ditch tackle.

Runners up this time. But what an improvement - what a performance! Unbeaten up until the final and we didn't concede a goal in open play. A big thank you to Mr Firkins and the team can be very proud of themselves. It does mean we now qualify for the Cheshire finals!
