World Book Day

Lesson: Understanding the World

Class: Year 1 Foxes Year: 2019-2020

Thursday was World Book Day. But rather than get dressed up, we chose texts for each class that promoted sustainability and the importance of looking after our planet.

Year 5 and 6 looked at the text "Last Tree in the City". It tells a story of a young boy who lived in the city surrounded by concrete buildings. He would go and spend time visiting the last tree, but one day it was gone. Then, inspired by a poem by Brian Moses which described a world that was a mess and in chaos, the pupils wrote their own poem about their perfect world. Decorated with art prints of the Earth, the pupils' work was hung up on a tree branch in the corridor.

Year 3 and 4 read the text "One World". The story tells how a brother and sister spend their day playing on the beach by a rock pool. They created their own tiny marine world in a bucket and, with its wildlife, shells, oil and even a tin can, it was a microcosm of the larger world outside. The children created art work of buckets filled with things for their own perfect world.

In Year 1 and 2, they read the text "Alba the Hundred Year Old Fish". which gently teaches the children the issue of pollution in the seas. The children decorated their own fish and wrote letters to David Attenborough.

In Early Years, they read, "Somebody Swallowed Stanley". Stanley is a plastic bag and it tells the story of the problems a simple plastic bag can create in the oceans and all the creatures he meets on his journey. The pupils did some junk modelling using waste plastics to make their own sea creatures or decorations.
