Remembrance Day
Lesson: British Values
Class: Year 6 Kestrels Year: 2015 - 2016
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, at Farndon we always take a moment to remember those brave people that gave their lives in the major wars and other conflicts involving our country.
As it was the 100 year anniversary last year, parents may remember that we had a whole week dedicated to this which culminated in an afternoon of sharing work with the parents and a poppy field at the front of school.
This year Mr Gallagher, a local resident in Churton, came to speak with the Year 6 children. He is currently leading a campaign, with Dan Snow as the patron, to have a dedicated memorial for the men from Churton who lost their lives in the Great War.
The pupils had a chance to see actual photographs of children at Farndon Primary over 100 years ago and saw 2 boys who grew up to fight in the Great War. Sadly, one was killed and the children found his name on the memorial at the church yard. They also got to experience first hand some of their equipment and they attempted to put "puttees" round their legs.
After the lesson, our House Captains accompanied staff and Mr Gallagher to the memorial in the churchyard where they laid a poppy wreath. Back at school, Reverend Captain David Scurr led a remembrance service and the last post signaled the start of our silence to remember those who did not come home.
