Reading Test

During SATs week, Year 6 pupils will be asked to complete a Reading test and a Grammar test. We teacher assess writing in Year 6, looking at the work they consistently produce in class.

The reading test is one hour, during which the children have to read a booklet and then answer are range of questions. Throughout the test, the children are encouraged to look at the reading booklet to find the answers. Some questions are retrieval of details and might be 1 or 2 marks. Other questions might be on inference and pupils are asked to back up their answers with opinion and references from the text.

Some questions look at author's choice of language: For example, "When she fell down the stairs the pain flared through her knee." Why is flared a good word to choose   2 marks

Think what is the author trying to make you think / feel: Flared is good as it suggests its spreading and getting worse and that it is very painful!!

Other questions focus on layout of the text. Why is this word in bold?  Don't say to make it stand out - that's a given! Why does the author want it to stand out?

GRAMMAR TEST

The pupils have 45 minutes to answer questions on spelling rules, grammar and punctuation.
