Headteacher Weekly blog week beginning 28th September
Date: 3rd Oct 2015 @ 3:47pm
This week wasn't quite as jam packed as the previous week but was busy nonetheless.
The week started with more sport: both of our football teams were in league action. Our Year 5 and 6 team tasted defeat with a 5 - 1 loss. It was all square at half time, but Kelsall played well and our heads dropped a little. The team will have to pick themselves up quickly as Acresfield are the visitors very soon. The Year 3 and 4 team also played Kelsall. With the scores level at half time, Farndon picked up the pace with Travis, Cameron and Oliver on top form. The game finished 4 - 2.
On Wednesday, the Year 5 and 6 pupils had the opportunity to visit Chester and the Deva Experience. As part of our topic planning, teachers plan each term enhancement days which may inlcude guest speakers, themed days or trips. Because the children have been learning all about the Romans, it made perfect sense to visit the historic town of Chester and learn about its local history. The children met a Roman centurion and learnt about their lives and their equipment. Whilst in the city, as part of their work in RE, the children all squeezed in a visit to the cathedral, producing some wonderful sketches.
The Reception children were busy this week learning all about Autumn, the leaves and farming. The children had a wonderful time searching the school grounds and making their autumn crowns. They also enoyed a visit form Reverend Scurr, who came in to talk to all of the early years about Harvest festival. Parents can see the photographs on the website.
In school, we launched the new spelling scheme this week across Year 2 and Year 6. We have altered our daily timetables to include grammar and punctuation sessions and spelling lessons so that it can be explicitly taught. We hope this will then have a positive impact on pupils' ability to apply their spellings in their independent writing. Parents can access the curriculum coverage on the website under Farndon grammar.
I enjoyed teaching the Year 5 and 6 pupils poetry this week; their attitude to learning was very positive, as was their behaivour. I also taught the Year 6 pupils hockey to help prepare for the up and coming tournament. Since their residential, the Year 6 pupils seem to have matured and grown into their role as the eldest class in school. I look forward to seeing how they progress throughout the year.
