Headteacher weekly blog week beginning 20th March
Date: 25th Mar 2018 @ 12:12pm
What a few weeks it has been! There has been so much going on. Blink and you may have missed some things.
Friday was the Reading for the Stars celebration. It was a fantastic day and I was thrilled to see so many families there to enjoy the event. With Easter around the corner, we had hot cross buns along with hot drinks and juice for the children. Everyone was challenged on their reading trivia in the form of a quiz. Things got quite competitve but Mrs Higley was on hand with her "clues" to help with those tricky questions! Well done to the winners - I hope you spend those vouchers on a really good book. I must say, looking at the data of children's progress in their reading, you can really see the impact of those children who are reading regularly.
Sport wise we had the basketball for some of our Year 5 pupils where they played on the Phoenix court. They played well but shooting was our achilles heel. Once we have the playgrounds back, we will install some basketball hoops to allow more practise for next time! And the netball team enjoyed even more success. They were magnificant in the Broxton tournament, winning all their matches and retaining the trophy. They followed this up with another league win to leave them top of the Chester league. They have had a great year and the girls deserve the success they have had.
Miss Schofield has been incredibly busy this week! Monday was Sports Relief in school where Miss Schofield led a "Dance - O - thon" The children had a great day with each class having a dance session. And Miss Schofield managed to keep dancing ALL day - even at break times! She did a fantastic job and we raised lots of money for a good cause. But Miss Schofield didn't stop there! She then took her dance group to the Broxton Dance event at the Heber High School. I have been told that the children were amazing and did a wonderful performance. They were a credit to the school and I must say a big thank you to all the positive comments sent through by parents. Along with 2 parents evenings as well, I dare say Miss Schofield has earnt a rest this weekend.
Last weekend, Mrs Higley and Mrs Wakefield took the Year 5 and 6 pupils to the Speech and Drama festival. They had practised so hard week after week at the end of a school day. All of our pupils did so so well. We had a third place in Year 5 and Year 6 had a second place with Jospeh. Jonas came first with an incredible score of 95! We have never known a score over 90 so it was a tremendous achievement!
I was most impressed this week with the technology work in Year 1 and Year 2. As part of their topic on Fire Fire, they designed and built a pulley system to pull up a bucket of water to put out the flames on their Tudor houses that they had drawn. Have a look on twitter to see the finished prodcuts - they looked fantastic.
As part of our thematic curriculum, there have been plenty of trips in the last few weeks of term. The Reception pupils enjoyed their trip out to Park Hall farm. And the Lower Juniors were off to Manchester. Year 1 are looking to reinforce their work on fractions with a visit to Pizza Express. I am sure it will be much better than fraction walls to help learn about equivalent fractions.
This week, we welcome back Mr Orford and Mr Bond from their French adventures with "Le Loup". Le Loup had some great experiences at a vineyeard, had lessons in French and meals out in French cafes. I am sure they will both come back with plenty resources and ideas for teaching modern foreign languages in our school.
So we move into the final week of the Spring term. With lots of exciting things to look forward to with new topics, better weather and seeing the new building start going up and I am already looking forward to the Summer term.
