Headteacher Weekly blog week beginning 1st February
Date: 7th Feb 2016 @ 1:35pm
It was another enjoyable week at Farndon.
My personal highlight was teaching in Year 5. It was the second lesson using the Scratch programming software and the pupils were creating their own interactive quiz on the solar system. The pupils were fantastic and produced some great games. What was really pleasing was that some pupils were pushing even further. Tom's quiz had 11 interactive questions! Roxie came up with a great idea on how to end her quiz. Together, we worked on how to change the screens depending on the score the game player achieved. It was a great moment when we cracked it and shared with the class. Next up, I am looking forward to teaching the Year 5 and 6 how to create their own space invader type game - Linden in Year 5 can't wait after I showed him my example.
There was plenty of sport once again this week. Our Year 3 and 4 team had a crucial league match agaisnt Oldfield who are very good side. It was a tight game and they went behind for the first time. But the team showed real resilience and dug in and managed to nick a 3 - 2 win. It's Delamere up next and we proudly sit top of the league. Our Year 5 and 6 children have enjoyed the after school sessions on basketball which have been led by a Chester Phoenix player. On Valentine's day, our winning basketball team have the chance to play in a tournament on the Phoenix court. Win that, and we get the chance to play a match at half time in front of the home crowd.
In Friday's Values and Celebration assemblies, we have given the chance to different children to share their own celebrations or perform and play their instruments they have been busy learning. This week, a group of Year 4 pupils showed off their street dance skills. Their routine was fantastic and we are now trying to sort a potential dance club after school in the summer term as it is something a lot of pupils have been asking for. Another club the pupils enjoy is the fencing club before school starts and the introductory assembly was as popular as ever.
I have been pleased to see the teaching of grammar this week and the impact it is having on the pupils' learning. The Year 3 session was lots of fun and I had to duck several times to avoid the "hot potato". I was really impressed with the knowledge the Year 2 pupils in my little grammar group after school. By the end of the session I think we cracked past progressive verbs.
Finally, exciting news - we have now finally got a Twitter account which I have managed to embed onto the homepage of our wesbite. I am hoping lots and lots of our parents start to follow us and like all our tweets that we write to share all the work and events that are taking place in our school.
