Headteacher blog Week beginning 20th April
Date: 25th Apr 2015 @ 11:47am
It was lovely to see everyone come back with a smile on their face after the Easter break. Everyone I spoke to was looking forward to the summer term.
Our new term began with an assembly on British values which we are promoting through the new curriculum. Saint George came into the hall riding his trusty steed and slayed the dragon. We then looked at the “real” story and how George was killed for standing up for Christians and for being a Christian himself. We looked at how in our society we have individual liberty and people have the right to make their own choices in life. We also discussed how as a society we must have tolerance and respect for other people’s own beliefs.
Next week, we will look at the British value of democracy. We are going to hold our own elections in line with the general election in May. We have 4 parties: the Progress party; the Vision party; the Tomorrow party; the Transform party. Their leaders will initially canvas opinion with pupils at break time and then write their manifesto which will be shared through posters and a speech in assembly. On the 11th May all the pupils will get to vote. The winning party will get to negotiate a budget with myself to carry out their “promises” and they will also get the chance to share their manifesto points at a Parish Council meeting.
In the first week, we had our first sporting competition – football. We completed a successful season with victory in the final over Tattenhall. The trophy remains in our glass cabinet. It is so pleasing to see the impact of the improvements we have made in PE through the expenditure of the Sports Premium. We continue to work hard to ensure as many children as possible participate in sport clubs or represent the school.
On Tuesday, we invited in an OFSTED inspector to spend some time in our Early Years department. It was overwhelmingly positive and he was most complimentary with regard to the teaching, environment and achievement of the pupils. Well done to all the staff in Early Years who I know work incredibly hard.
The new topics have begun. In the Infant classrooms there are pirate boats and beach shacks for their reading areas. In the lower juniors, ancient Egyptian pyramids have been built. I can’t wait to see the work they produce as they are two of my favourite topics. The upper juniors have already begun rehearsing for their end of year show. I won’t spoil it but the singing is sounding fantastic.
It has only been a week and I am excited about the Summer term already!
