Head's blog Week Beginning 10th November
Date: 16th Nov 2014 @ 11:59am
This week the children have enjoyed coming off timetable and away from their topics and have had the chance to experience a History week, focusing on the Great Wars. This obviously centred around our remembrance service which took place on the 11th day of the 11th Month at the 11th hour.
Several classes had the opportunity to take part in drama work shops with a lady who had several sons in the war and they got to read letters from the front line. Some classes visited local memorials to find out more of those local people who did not make it back home. We were also fortunate to have local people from the Historical society who came in to share War artefacts. The upper Juniors also had the chance to experience what it was like to be evacuated during World War II. As always, the children looked wonderful dressed as evacuees - some even had suitcases!! They then went to Tatton Park for the complete countryside experience and even milked a cow ( not a real one by all accounts ).
Reverend Scurr led the school's remembrance assembly and Mrs Williams very kindly played the last post as we observed a 2 minute silence.
All classes throughout the week took part in a range of activites including art, poetry and baking. All the pupils were inspired by the display of poppies in London and we created our own display at the front of school. Before the wind and rain came, they did look absolutely wonderful. Reception and Year 1 pupils created some fantastic art work with poppies and Year 2 made an amazing tapestry of poppies ( a big thank you to Mrs McCarthy for bringing it altogether ).
Year 4 made tiles with poppies on and the Upper Juniors wrote some thought provoking poetry. Lots of children were busy baking throughout the week to sell, raising money for Help the Heroes. I got to taste "Trench Cake" in Year 2, which I was told was made with vinegar!!! Surprisingly, it was delicious!
The week ended sharing some of the work the pupils produced and it was so good to see so many Parents and Grandparents come in to look at the work and speak with the children. There were many positive comments, but what was most pleasing for myself was that many Parents said how impressed they were with the children's understanding and empathy for the people who experienced and lived through the war.
"A lovely display of their work such a lot of effort has obviously gone into this. It is a great idea to allow us to see and donate to such a worthy cause," one Parent wrote. Another Parent wrote, "A moing display of both World Wars. Much has been learnt and the children are clearly empathising with the tragedies of the past."
A huge thank you for all the staff's hard work and in particular to Miss Schofield, our History Leader, who pulled the week together.
Finally, we must not forget it was also Children in Need on Friday, and a big thank you to the Parents and their voluntary contributions. The children looked fabulous in their hero outfits. All the money raised will go to Children in Need.
