Gifted and Science Day Year 5

Date: 5th Jun 2015 @ 9:00am

On Wednesday myself and a few other children from my class (Olivia, Will, Henry & Harry A) went to Abbeygate College with children from several other schools.  We started the day in the science lab.  We started by testing different types of hand warmer.  We added water into a beaker then added a gel handwarmer  to see how warm the water got.  We also tested a disposable handwarmer by using an elastic band to strap it to a thermometer to see how hot it got.  After that the fun bit started as we got to make our own handwarmer.  We got to use Bunsen burners which we lit using a splint.  Measuring out 20ml water, we then added 25g sodium acetate and heated it over the Bunsen burner for 10 minutes.  This was one of my favourite bits.  Whilst having break, Mr Tempest the science teacher measured out the mixture into small containers with lids.  After break we tested them.  Mr Tempest banged them on the table and took off the lid.  Most peoples activated after the lid was taken off, as did mine and Olivia’s.  The ones that didn’t work had extra sodium acetate added to make them work.

After this was lunch (cold bacon on a batch – very good, but I think Mr Walker enjoyed his free lunch even more than I did).  This was definitely one of the best bits of the day.  Then we had maths.  The first thing was solving a mystery.  We had to knock suspects off the list by solving the clues.  We got the right answer (it was Jerry).  It was good to get maths questions right, Mrs Higgley has obviously been doing a good job!  This was also the best maths lesson we had as they gave us a geometry set afterwards.

For our final lesson we had to make 3D shapes using spaghetti and jelly babies, which was harder than it sounds as my partner decided to massacre the jelly babies.   Another fun lesson as we got to eat the jelly babies.  We also made up some new shapes including the Walkerhedron.  A shape with 17 faces and 15 vertices.

This was a really good day and we all had fun.
