Endangered!

This is one of our favourite topics! The work centres around Geography. It begins with a study of South America where we look at the countries, climate, physical geography and human geography. Then, we move onto learning about the Amazon rainforest. Pupils will be able to learn about the different layers of the rainforest and about the effects deforestation is having on the environment. Our Geographical enquiry will focus on why the world's rainforests are so important to us.

We also plan to squeeze in some History where we will look at what life was life for the Anicent Mayans. The children will learn where the Mayans originated from within central America. We will look at how the Mayan civilisation is known for its maths, astronomy, calendars and architecture. In their study books, we will learn about the daily life of the Mayan people including food, clothing, housing, buildings and entertainment. There will also be time to learn about their religion and their gruesome sacrifices. Our Historical enquiry will answer questions such as were the Ancient Mayans savages or civilised and what brought on their demise.

In Design and Technology, our pupils will be designing and making a stuffed animal toy in order to sell them to raise money for charities who are working hard to protect the rainforests and reduce deforestation. They will be using textiles and some tricky stitching techniques such as blanket stitch. Our Art will focus on creating sculpture using sustainable materials. The pupils will be inspired by the works of Jill Townsley and Michelle Reader.

Computing will begin with using media to create vector gaphics. For coding, they will use Scratch to make their own interactive quiz on either South America or the Ancient Mayans.

Our Science studies will be centred on Biology where we will learn abouta nimal life cycles and animal adaptations. We will classify living things into broad groups;  learn about the life cycle of different living things; know the differences between different life cycles; and know the process of reproduction in plants. For adaptation we look how the Earth and living things have changed over time; how fossils can be used to find out about the past ; know about reproduction and offspring (recognising that of; fspring normally vary and are not identical to their parents) learn about how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment; link adaptation over time to evolution and be able to explain what it is.
