Planning

Our topic in the Summer term is

"The Romans"

✏️ Literacy ✏️

In Literacy this term, we will be exploring the classic myth of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus, which features famous gods, goddesses, and well-known Italian places.
We’ll also be reading Escape from Pompeii, a powerful story about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, following the characters Tranio and Livia. This text links beautifully with our Geography learning too!

The children will take part in lots of exciting writing activities, including:
✍️ Character and setting descriptions based on our topic texts
📰 Writing news reports about the Pompeii disaster
📢 Creating persuasive adverts inspired by life in Roman times

🏛️ History/Geography 🏛️

Our topic focus this summer term will be History, with exciting links to Geography throughout. We’ll be learning all about Roman soldiers, what they wore, and the roles in the Roman army The children will explore Roman roads, build timelines of key events, and discover the dramatic story of Pompeii. We’ll also explore everyday life in Roman Britain and the lasting legacy of the Romans. As part of our Geography learning, the children will be learning about volcanoes. We’ll compare the climate and terrain of the UK and Italy, and take a closer look at Italy’s three main volcanoes.

🧱 Art/Design and Technology 🧱

This term, we’ll explore the history of Roman pottery, focusing on how Romans made clay pots for various uses. We’ll learn about techniques like coil pots and thumb pots, and how slip is used to join clay.. The children will create their own clay sculptures, learning to join clay, work independently, and apply 3D techniques. They will also reflect on their work, naming the tools and methods they used. In Design and Technology, we will be exploring different types of bridges and how they are constructed, with a focus on Roman bridges and their use of the arch. Children will design and create their own model bridges, considering materials and techniques used by the Romans to build strong, durable structures. They will put together step-by-step plans, sketch their designs, and refine their work as they progress. Throughout the project, they will evaluate their designs based on both appearance and functionality, making improvements where needed.

📷 Computing 📷

In Computing the children will develop their understanding of how digital images can be changed and edited, and how they can then be resaved and reused. They will consider the impact that editing images can have, and evaluate the effectiveness of their choices. This ties into our Roman topic as they will be looking at and editing images of Roman artefacts or structures, considering how digital tools can help us explore and present historical information.

🧲 Science 🧲

In Science our main topic will be Forces. We will explore forces and magnets, focusing on how ma.gnets attract and repel. The children will learn that magnets have two poles (north and south), and opposite poles attract while the same poles repel. They will investigate the magnetic properties of materials, predict how magnets will behave in different situations, and explore the concept of magnetic fields. The children will also explore everyday uses for magnets and conduct experiments to test their strength and properties.
