Headteacher Weekly blog week beginning 18th January

Date: 24th Jan 2016 @ 10:53am

It was another enjoyable week in school with lots of fun and exciting things for the children to engage in.

I went along to Nantwich with the Year 1 and Year 2 children on their trip linked to the topic on the Great Fire of London. I found it particularly interesting as it was where I grew up and had no idea of some of the town's rich history. History is one of my personal favourite subjects and I am a great believer that history is best learnt with hands on practical experiences rather than out of a text book. The children had a great time learning all about the fire in Nantwich in the museum and then Barry gave a walking tour around the town, showing where and how it started and how it spread. He finished at the pillory where the person who was blamed for causing the fire was punished. The children also got to see many of the fine Tudor buildings that were rebuilt at the request of Queen Elizabeth I and looked at how they were made.

Reception continued with their work on chocolate and enjoyed a visit from a chocolatier. The children were very excited about working with her and made a whole manner of tasty treats. Apparently, they even made a chocolate pizza!! Next week, they are going to get the chance to work with Junior Chef and it will have a Willy Wonka theme, making chocolate ganache - delicious!

The Year 5 and 6 pupils have had a great week studying poetry and learning all about performance poetry. At the end of the week, they got the chance to write their own poem based on their work in science and the solar system. Once they had completed their poems, they had the chance to perform them and took videos of them using the I-pads. They were very proud sharing them with me and I have to say I was most impressed.

We have been busy preparing our Year 5 and 6 children for the upcoming basketball tournament. I am looking forward to the professionals taking over on Tuesday next week as after only 5 minutes I hurt my finger! Chester Phoenix players are coming into the school to work with the children after school on Tuesdays.

The week ended with Computing training on coding. As a staff, we looked at Scratch - a programme for us to use to create various applications linked to our topics. It can be accessed on line for pupils to use. I am looking forward to taking Year 6 on Wednesday to start creating our own space invaders game; I only hope I can remember the training!

It's hard to believe that we are half way through the first term already! I can't wait to see what our pupils experience next week.
